Keeping Staithes’ stories alive for all generations

Staithes Museum is a much‑loved heritage centre dedicated to celebrating the rich history of Staithes and its people. Inside its beautifully restored Grade II listed Methodist Chapel, visitors can explore hundreds of years of village life, from fishing and ironstone mining to alum quarrying, maritime traditions and the early days of Captain Cook’s apprenticeship.

It is a wonderfully varied collection with thousands of photographs, artefacts, and pieces of memorabilia that capture the everyday industries that shaped the village. While displays on lifeboat history, maritime models, natural sciences and Staithes’ vibrant artistic heritage offer something new at every turn for visitors. There is even a nod to the once‑bustling railway that connected Staithes to the wider region. It is a place where local stories are kept alive, shared with pride and passed on to the next generation.

A community effort

What began as the passion of Reg and Anne Firth has grown into a thriving, community‑run museum. Since Reg’s passing in 2018, volunteers, curators, trustees and supporters have worked together to honour his vision. Their dedication means the museum remains a welcoming space where people reconnect with their roots and discover the stories that shaped this remarkable coastal village.

Today, the museum welcomes more than 47,000 visitors each year, an extraordinary achievement for a small organisation on the North Yorkshire coast. Many visitors return again and again, often bringing their own memories, photographs or family stories to add to the collection.

Volunteers are at the heart of it all; some arrive as visitors and soon find themselves helping to catalogue objects, support exhibitions or share stories with others. One volunteer, who popped in after many years living away, now plays a key role in documenting thousands of items. This is a lovely example of how important heritage work can spark belonging, confidence and pride in community.

How flexible funding made a real difference

Support from the Dulverton Fund has allowed the museum to invest in what really keeps it going, people, time and continuity.

The funding has helped cover staff wages, including trainee curators, so the team could focus on the everyday work that matters, heritage education, community engagement, collections care and digitisation. This stability strengthened the museum at a crucial moment and meant they could keep building relationships, welcoming volunteers and planning for the future.

It also helped them maintain momentum towards longer‑term goals, including their Museum Accreditation submission, which was sent off in January 2026 and is now eagerly awaited.

Growing confidence, connection and capacity

The impact of this flexible support has been felt across the whole organisation:

Better access to the collection through digitisation and interpretation is helping more people explore Staithes’ history.
Greater resilience with secure staffing, the team can plan ahead rather than constantly chasing short‑term funding.

For a small heritage organisation, being able to invest in core work rather than creating a new project for every grant has made a lasting difference. It’s strengthened the museum’s foundations and ensured Staithes’ stories continue to be shared with warmth and care.
