Supporting early development and communication skills for children with Down Syndrome through the Shining Stars project
Shine21 is a dedicated charity in North Yorkshire committed to supporting children with Down Syndrome and their families. Established in October 2020 in response to the struggles of two local families seeking meaningful support, Shine21 has grown into a vital resource for over 50 families across York, Harrogate, Ripon, Scarborough, and Whitby. Their mission is to provide early intervention, tailored therapy, and a supportive community to give every child the best possible start in life.
Helping children shine
Each week, Shine21 hosts ‘Shining Stars’ sessions at their centre in Sutton-on-the-Forest. These sessions are designed for children aged 0–9 and focus on building essential motor skills, communication, and key life skills. For many children with Down Syndrome, learning to speak and be understood can take longer and come with unique challenges. Shine21’s targeted approach helps children overcome these barriers and build confidence.
Activities include Makaton signing, speech sound development, language use, social communication, pre-reading, attention and listening, and early numeracy. As children progress, more advanced skills like reading and maths are introduced. Sessions are kept small, just four children at a time, so each child receives tailored support. Parents attend alongside their children, learning techniques they can use at home and connecting with others on a similar journey.
Shine21 also works closely with nurseries and schools to ensure children receive consistent support across settings.
Why it matters
The impact of Shine21’s work goes far beyond the sessions themselves. Children gain the skills they need to participate in education alongside their peers, reducing barriers and opening doors to inclusion. Parents gain confidence, insight, and a supportive network. For many families, Shine21 becomes a vital part of their journey.
One parent shared:
“The development sessions have not only taught my daughter how to recognise letters, numbers, and words, but they have also taught her to listen, wait her turn, and gain valuable communication skills. Following these sessions, she has transitioned seamlessly into school. We will always be grateful for the expertise, care, attention, and resources we have received.”
Another explained
“The development sessions have helped in so many ways. They give my son the skills he needs to join in with his peers at preschool. His development has come on hugely. Unfortunately, there is nothing like this available elsewhere. Thank goodness we have Shine21.”
How funding makes a difference
With funding from Two Ridings Community Foundation, Shine21 have continued delivering its Shining Stars sessions, covering staff costs, resources, and rent. This support ensures that more families can access the help they need, when they need it most.
Louise Mouncey, from Shine21, shared:
“The application process was straightforward, and the support we received was incredible. Working with Two Ridings has been inspiring, as they truly understand our vision. Their support empowers us to plan for a future where every family feels equipped and supported.”
